Everest Base Camp via Gokyo lakes

Everest Base Camp via Gokyo lakes, known for the series of beautiful lakes in the Gokyo and the ChoLa Pass, takes us through the landmarks of the Khumbu region.

Looking for some bang on adventure in the Everest region? Here we have designed for you this extremely adventurous route with the combination of Everest Base Camp via Gokyo Lakes. This is most suitable plan for those who have three weeks’ time and who wouldn’t want to miss both Everest Base Camp and the serene view of magnificent Gokyo Lake.

Nepal welcomes more than 30,000 people every year to trek in the most popular and most desired mountain region of Nepal: Everest. It has now become common to most of the visitors to just visit the Base Camp and return back. Only few dare to choose less heard and less crowded and more difficult routes like Renjo La pass and Cho La pass. Only few are aware of the fact that in the whole region, Gokyo is the only spot blessed with the privilege of providing the least hindered sight of Everest in its most refined form. The ability to be there through all the hardship is even more rewarding than the view from the base camp.

Everest base camp via Gokyo starts from Lukla and enters through Sagarmatha National Park will offer you a bold view of the highest mountain of the world, Mt. Everest. The route is followed by a relatively difficult route to the Gokyo Lake and Gokyo RI passing through the stunning Chola Pass and again return back to Lukla through Renjo La pass and Thame.

As we walk past the routes, we will cross many Sherpa villages and get to know their culture and traditions. We will also be able to learn how Sherpa and Tibetan people; both being the followers of Buddhism are alike in terms of language and their lifestyle.

The most exciting part about this trek is the ablility to view the diverse natural beauty of diverse location all within half month. You will be amazed to witness various landscapes everyday as you ascend and descend through the trails. Religious spots formed with the Mani stones and the Buddhist player flags, alpine meadows at some point, dry deserted land at some spot, sometimes the rugged steep hills and frozen frosty lakes will all mesmerize you and put you in awe struck silence.

After that, we then do Sightseeing in Kathmandu valley of famous UNESCO world heritage sites like Boudhanath, one of the largest Stupas in the world; Swayambhunath, a famous monkey temple, and Pashupatinath, a sacred Hindu temple complex. Apart from Sightseeing, we also get TIMS cards and permits for our trekking on this day. In the evening, we do initial preparation for the trekking.
Overnight at Hotel.
After early breakfast, we depart from Kathmandu via airplane for Lukla (2840 m). The flight takes about 35 minutes to reach Lukla airport from Kathmandu. The Lukla flight is one of the most dramatic short-distance flights in the world. The Lukla Airport is located on a hill and consists of a single runway that drops off towards its end to the deep gaping valley below. Surrounded by tall mountains and jaded hills, the airstrip at Lukla is quite fascinating and the flight is a thrilling adventure in itself. Upon arrival at Lukla, the changes are immediately felt. The mountainous landscape becomes quite prominent and the air carries a crisp freshness to it, which only the Himalayan atmosphere carries. From Lukla, the trekking trail slowly moves towards the Cheplung Village. The view of the sacred Mount Khumbila from the village at Cheplung is gorgeous. From there, a gradual walk downwards leads to the village of Phakding. The terrain is amazing and tall hills surround the trail like giant mounds of emeralds. From Phakding, the sight of the Kusum Kangraru Mountain can be seen. The village of Phakding lies in the Dudh Koshi River valley north of Lukla and contains many guesthouses and lodges for the service of tourists and trekkers.
Overnight at Guesthouse.
Note: The weather in Lukla is very unpredictable. Sometimes due to bad weather, the flight may be delayed or canceled. If the flight is canceled, you will have to return back to the hotel in Kathmandu. The transportation back to the hotel and accommodation on this night is not included. If the weather is clear the next day, you will get either the 3rd or 4th flight to Lukla. If still, the weather is not clear, there will be an option for helicopter flight also. The cost for helicopter flights is not fixed. It will be quoted by the airlines on the same day. You will have to pay an additional approx. 250 USD for the helicopter flight from KTM to Lukla. Although this problem is rare, it is our duty to let you know in advance.
After breakfast at Phakding, the trail further opens out to reach the celebrated mountain town of Namche Bazaar. On route to Namche, several smaller villages are crossed, like Jorsale and Monjo. Monjo lies north of Phakding and is the entry point of the Sagarmatha National Park. The trail ventures through the national park and finally arrives at Namche. Walking along the trekking route through the Sagarmatha National Park presents many virtues, like its alpine woods, small rivers and brooks, and deciduous forests. Thick acreages of Pine and Cedar cover the lands and provide a pleasant atmosphere to trek through. Namche Bazaar, because of its strategic location, is the commercial hub of the Khumbu region. It is located on a mountainside and views of the Thamserku Peak and the Kongdi RI Himal from
here are amazing.
Overnight at Guesthouse.
Today we spend our whole day at Namche Bazaar to get acclimatized with the high elevated environment. We explore the beautiful huge secluded bowl-shaped Namche Bazaar. The marvelous sight of Khumbu Mountains like Ama Dablam (6856 m), Thamserku (6608 m) as well as immense vistas of Everest will take away your breath. Additionally, we walk to Thami (3810 m) situated above Bhote Khola River Valley. We also visit the Sagarmatha National park to view the protected floras and faunas.
Overnight at Teahouse.
We climb the ridge above Namche and descend to the Dudh Koshi River before climbing again to Tengboche Monastery, the most important monastery in the region. Devoche, a charming village, slightly further (20 minutes). Depending upon the weather and other factors, we can end our day in Debuche (4410 m) or stay in Namche.
Overnight at Guesthouse.
Today we walk slowly through the pleasant village of Pangboche and on to Dingboche. We make a quick descend to Debuche before starting an uphill climb towards Pangboche. We can observe Mt. Everest, Amadablam, and Nuptse mountains along the way. We stop in Pangboche for tea before continuing to Somare for lunch. We then cross the Imja Valley and Lobuche Stream before ascending to Dingboche (4410 m).
Overnight at Guesthouse.
At Dingboche, we will have another acclimatization day. Hiking to Nagerjun located at the height of 5100 m would be a good choice rather than exploring lazily around Dingboche. Nagerjun lying just above Dingboche is set on a hill on the edges of the Chhukung valley. While hiking, we will notice the trail turning steeper making the walk quite strenuous. Walking for approximately 5 hours, we will reach Nagerjun which showers a panoramic sight of Lobuche East (6119 m), Lobuche West (6145 m), Kangtega (6685 m), Taboche Peak (6367 m), Thamserku (6608 m), and Ama Dablam (6856 m). If you happen to see the stunning sight of Makalu, the world’s fifth tallest peak, you should consider yourself lucky. The view of Pheriche Valley too is a pleasurable experience. Capturing memorable highlights, we will walk back to Dingboche. After finishing our lunch, we can just enjoy the sunbath and relax.
Overnight at Guesthouse.
A difficult day with steep climbing awaits us. The day starts with a gradual climb to Dughla, where we stop for our lunch. A steep climb from Dughla takes us to the memorial of famous mountaineers such as Scott Fischer and Babu Chiri Sherpa. We then enter the Khumbu Glacier area and follow the route to Lobuche (4910 m), where we our trek of the day.
Overnight at Guesthouse.
This is a big and difficult day walk along the Khumbu Glacier and up to Everest Base Camp at 5,365 m, the closest you can get to Mt. Everest without mountaineering equipment. During spring, there will likely be expedition teams about to attempt the summit. The view of the Khumbu Icefall from Base Camp is spectacular. We return back to Gorak Shep for the night.
Overnight at Guesthouse.
The day starts early at dawn with a hike up to one of the finest viewpoints, Kalapattar (5545 m / 18188ft) because the sight of the rising sun seen from there is totally incredible, and witnessing Mt. Everest and the spectacular Himalayan ranges change the color of from silver to gold is truly a bliss. Then we will trek back to Gorekshep for hot breakfast and then descend to Dzongla.
Overnight at Guesthouse.
We begin the day by climbing to Cho-la crossing over and descending once more to Thangna. Cho La pass is considered one of the risky and thus most adventurous sports in the Everest region that once the trekkers are supposed to pass through, few even turn their way back with the thought of giving up. But heading tactfully listening to the instruction of the guide carefully, you will have no problem doing so.
Overnight at Guesthouse.
This day is a special one when your spirit of taking risks is going to reward you with the feeling no words in the dictionary can explain. We trek to Gokyo Lake crossing over Ngozumpa Glacier (the large glacier in the Himalayan 36 Kilometers in Length). Gokyo village stands by the third lake and Cho-Oyu Mountain as
a backdrop sets an amazing spectacular sight at this juncture. After lunch, you may explore the Lake, Dudh Pokhari, and click pictures as a memory to show it to your close ones.
Overnight at Guesthouse.
You will wake up early and climb up to the Gokyo-RI for an interesting panoramic view of the Mahalangur Himalayan range. It takes approximately 2 hours to climb to the top of the peak that will provide a panoramic view of Cho-Oyu, the Gyachung Kang, Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Cholatse, and the Tawache. This day will also supply you with a great view of the Ngozumpa glacier- the largest glacier in Nepal.
Overnight at Guesthouse.
Today we climbed down a steep trail to Phortse Thanga enjoying rhododendron, wildflowers, and waterfalls. Look out for Himalayan wildlife – mountain goats, musk deer, pheasant (national bird of Nepal). Once at Mong, we can admire the great views of Khumbila peak. On our way to Namche, we get a good view of Taboche, Ama Dablam, Thamserku and Kangtega mountains. A few moments later, we reached the intersection where the trail from Sanasa meets our trail. We walk on a trail that swings to a forested slope beyond Kyangjuma. After reaching Namche Army Camp hill, we look back to see Lhotse, the summit of Everest, and Tengboche for the last time. About a kilometer from here is Namche Bazaar. Overnight in Namche Bazaar.
We walk on the Shore of Dudhkoshi River through the valley trail. We hike downhill and uphill to the end of Everest Base Camp via the Gokyo lakes trek. This is our last day of trekking as we return to Lukla where the trek began. We enjoy this time to reflect on the trek as a group and the personal achievement of all those who took part. The afternoon is free, so you can wander about, relax and enjoy the surroundings.
