The Makalu Base Camp trek is an ideal trekking route for nature lovers who want to get to know nature and culture on the trekking path as well as the various views of the highest peak in the world, Mt. Everest.
This region has a rich cultural heritage, incomparable beauty and natural diversity. This is a hike towards the mountain Makalu (8483 m), the fifth highest mountain in the world. The route also leads through dense rhododendron forests. You will also occasionally see animals such as deer, bored monkeys and many different species of birds. If you’re higher up, you may be able to spot the blue sheep and the snow leopards that are on the IUCN’s list of Threatened Animals.
Meet the Sherpa in Tashigaun during your acclimatization day. The radiant smile of the locals will enchant you. On the way you will meet Rai and Sherpa people who live in the Himalayas, among others. You can also stop at the Swiss Base Camp on the banks of the desolate Barun Pokhari. From Makalu Base Camp we have a spectacular view of the rarely seen Kangshung face of Everest, Lhotse, Chamlang and Kanchenjunga in the Far East. The towering peaks of 3, 5, Yaupa and the Chamlang Himal along the Tibetan border.
It is recommended that you have experience with trekking and that you are in good health before starting trekking in the Makalu region. In this region, only a full hike is possible at Makalu campsite, where all supplies are carried by local owners from day one.
Arrival at Tribhuwan International Airport. Our Staff member meets you and transfers you to the hotel.

Morning wake-up and breakfast in hotel.
Our guide will meet you in your hotel and brief you about the upcoming Makalu base camp trekking. He will guide you through all the formalities and necessary paper-works required for the trekking.
After that, we then do a Sightseeing in Kathmandu valley of famous UNESCO world heritage sites like Boudhanath, one of the largest Stupas in the world; Swayambhunath, a famous monkey temple and Pashupatinath, a sacred Hindu temple complex. Apart from Sightseeing, we also get TIMS card and permits for our trekking on this day. In the evening, we do initial preparation for the trekking.

After breakfast, we fly calmly over the Himalayas to Tumlingtar, where we meet our trekking crew. Drive north of Shoba Khola along the ridge above the flat, warm Tumlintar Valley towards Khadbari. The road continues through a beautiful terrace field with a wonderful view of the green valley. The sloping road brings us to our campsite in Chichila. Enjoy the sunset and the mountains in Maklau area.

We enjoy a beautiful view of the mountain. Chamlang (7319 m) Makalu (8463 m) and sawtooth-shaped forest ridges move around with many birds. The path continues on a bumpy road that often follows a shortcut that leads past the Sherpa fururu settlement at 1900 m. Gentle ascent along the ridge line through the forest, which is heavily covered by firewood, gathers in the surrounding villages. Shortly afterwards, you go past Mure off the road and into the spectacularly situated village of Num.

The path turns north of the ridge and leads steeply to the Aurn River at 620 m. The hike continues over a dubious-looking suspension bridge that leads up the same climb on the exposed rocky field of Pachowk. Ascent for about 1000 m through dense forest, finally leads to the beautiful Seduwa campsite. There is a large flat camping meadow directly above the checkpoint of the Makalu Barun National Park checkpoint. The village of Num is clearly visible in front of the campsite on a long green hill.

We climb a ridge that leads past the Mani Wall and gently climb north through the rice terrace to the village of Manigaun. A short daily walk, climbing and then the contours of a beautiful village and a wilderness forest to the last settlement on the walk-in in Tashigaon.

Take a wonderful walk through the Sherpa village, wash yourself and make it easy for yourself. We take a look at the surrounding and let our body adjust to the new environment. Today we acclimatize at Tashi Gaun.

We climb steeply through the thick forest of rhododendron and pass many crests and seasonal yak herders to an open hill with a tea shop. The path climbs back to Chipla at 2520 m, here the path becomes even steeper. He struggles up the stream and a huge overhanging rock just below the Manidanda. Our destination Khongma welcomes us with a terraced campsite.

From Khongma, climb the steep ridge to the stone bend at 3840 m and enjoy Chamlang, Peak 6 (6739 m) and Peak 7 (6105 m). We climb stone stairs and pass several false ridges to Ghungu La, also called TuTu La, around 4050 m. Descent to Kalo Pokhar and steep climb to Shipton La at 4216 m, named after Eric Shipton, who followed the route with Edmond Hillary in 1952. Drive to Thulo Pokhari and climb the last pass of the day, Ka Ka La at 4150 m, before descending to our camp in a clearing between rhododendrons in Dobato.

The path leads over a slope covered with screed into the long, curving Barun valley, which forms a natural road towards your destination. Hike through a long landslide along the river through a gorge to a more open valley and to our high-altitude campsite in Yangri Kharka next to the Barun River with colorful prayer flags and a view of Makalu after a few days.

The path runs upstream with a waterfall and gentle ascent to Ngle Kharka at 3750 m with a wonderful mountain view and alpine meadow. Beyond Ngle Kharka, the river forms a huge S-shaped curve between a certain rock face that rises on both sides of the river. The hike leads past many yak herders and meadows of Rupak Kharka (3930 m) and Jhak Kharka (4210 m). Passing a beautiful waterfall and a swampy pasture, we come to a standstill overnight on the summer pasture of Yak Kharka.

To acclimatize for the last ascent, this is a short day. The landscape here is a dry mass of sand and gravel. Follow a path west of the creek on the north side of the moraine with the pyramid peak of Hongku Chuli (6835 m). A nice day walk through a high alpine environment. Shersong arrives around a corner, within sight of the Lower Barun Glacier.

Visit the Makalu base camp (5100 m) with breathtaking views along the way. However, the base camp has no prospect unless it’s nice to interact with the Makalu expedition group in season. Back to the campsite. Lunch and ascent to a height of approx. 5000 m on a ridge in the north with a view of Makalu, Cho Oyu, Nuptse, Everest and many more. We spend a second night in Sherson.

Walk back down the alpine meadow along the Barun river to the warmer flat plateau.

Continue down through the rock fall and climb up the canyon to Dobato.

Today we cross Kaka La, Shipton La and Tutu La and then make a short descent to the Khongma campsite.

Take a long sleep and return to Tashi Gaun’s civilization. After lunch, take a walk to Seduwa.

We start the day with a descent into the hot and steamy Arun River Valley. We cross the Khola and then begin the tough climb up the ridge on the other side to Num.

An early start and a relatively easy morning hike along the ridge to Chichila that takes about 5 hours. Here we get in our jeep and drive back to Tumlingtar.

We take the morning flight to Kathmandu and drive to the hotel in the afternoon.
